Sustained Investigation

My idea for the sustained investigation was “What were my experiences in Mountain Biking?” I choose this topic because I’d been participating for a couple of years and found it an enjoyable sport that taught me teamwork, hard work, and a healthy way to cope with daily stresses.

~Requirements and Prompts ~

                                    State the following in writing:

★Identify the questions or inquiry that guided your sustained investigation.

★Describe how your sustained investigation shows evidence of practice, experimentation, and revision guided by your questions or inquiry  (1,200 characters maximum, including spaces, for response to both prompts.)

Questions that guide the sustained investigation are typically formulated at the beginning of portfolio development. Students should formulate their questions or inquiry based on their own experiences and ideas. These should be further developed by students throughout the sustained investigation.

The AP Art and Design portfolios each consist of two sections: Sustained Investigation and Selected Works.

Sustained Investigation—Section 1
15 digital images; some may be details or process images | 60% of portfolio score
Students will submit images and writing to document their inquiry-guided investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision:

  • 15 digital images that include works of art and design and process documentation.

  • Typed responses to prompts, providing information about the questions that guided their investigation and how they practiced, experimented, and revised, guided by their questions.

Selected Works—Section 2
5 works | 40% of portfolio score
In the 2020-21 school year, there will be no physical portfolios. Students will submit digital images of their work and commentary online to demonstrate a skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas:

  • 5 digital images of works with commentary identifying the materials, processes, and ideas used.

  • Works may come from the Sustained Investigation section, but they do not have to.

*The explanation above is for the average year of AP Portfolio requirements, but during 2020 the requirements changed to 10 pieces for the Sustained Investigation and 3 Select works because of COVID-19.
